  • Describe where you come from
    • I am from Colorado Springs, Colorado. I was born in Rapid City, South Dakota.

  • Tell me where you're going
    • I am going to go to an undetermined location, preferably Europe, to study abroad for Fall of 2022.
  • Tell me how you plan to get there
    • I will get there by a transatlantic flight, ideally.
  • How are you LIKE your parents
    • I am like my mom because we have similar senses of humor.
    • I am like my dad because we are both friendly.
  • How are you UNLIKE your parent?
    • I am unlike my mom because I am more compassionate.
    • I am unlike my dad because I am less impulsive.
  • Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?
    • I have developed my own expectations for myself. My parents generally operate under the assumption that I will always make the right choices.
  • Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?
    • Someone that serves as a role model for me is Andy Dalton, former quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. He has a charity that serves pediatric patients in various medical facilities throughout Cincinnati and surrounding communities. He also exhibits other admirable qualities on and off the football field.

    • Wow, he is so cool and handsome.

  • Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?
    • I feel a special connection with this elephant that steals hats because he's funnier than other wild animals.

  • Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.
    • A kid I knew invited me to his tree hideout. It was inside of a pine tree and I asked how he cleared the branches out of the inside. He said he stole an axe out of someone's garage and everything else in the hideout had been stolen as well. We were like nine; I was a bit distraught.

  1. Hi Ethan, wow that is a gorgeous photo, I feel like people frequently discredit the Dakotas and don't realize how pretty they are but thats an awesome pic. Sounds like you've got some good qualities from your parents and have seemed to be dissimilar to them in all of the negative ways. Andy Dalton now plays for my Chicago Bears and I don't love him as a quarterback but I didn't know any of these things about him so maybe i'll like him a bit more now.

  2. Ethan,
I kept giggling while reading your blog, so thank you for that. I just have one question for you: How are you studying abroad next semester without knowing the location???? That seems a little dangerous and scary, but I hope it works out for you in the end. I am a little disappointed in the picture you chose of Andy Dalton because the football helmet blocks his "handsomeness". Also, it's quite ironic that you resonate with a hat-stealing elephant, but were distraught when this kid was stealing things and placing them inside of a tree.

    1. Hi Ellie, thank you for your comment!

I don't apply for the location till February but it is through USC. Also, you are right that is a bit ironic but I would argue there is a difference because the elephant gives the hat back. He is just a silly, goofy elephant, whereas the nine year old I knew was an axe-wielding menace.

  3. Hi Ethan,

Colorado is wild, I drove through there over the summer for the first time and was blown away by how varied the nature is. You're lucky you get to live there. It's nice that you've adhered to your own expectations and its great that you've earned the trust so that your parents always assume you know whats best for you. Also love the elephant pick. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they're one of the only animals that can actually understand jokes, so I guess that explains why they're so funny.

  4. Hi Ethan,

When I went to Colorado, I was tricked into hiking Mount Princeton. Have you ever gone hiking in Colorado?

Additionally, I think it would be so cool to meet this elephant. As a hat collector, I wonder how the elephant started collecting hats. Was he trained to do it or has he always had the urge to take hats?
